SALT LAKE CITY – (March 13, 2014) Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed Joseph M. Bean to fill a vacancy on the Second District Court.
"Joseph is uniquely qualified to serve as a district court judge," Gov. Herbert said. "His keen intellect combined with his breadth of legal expertise in civil, criminal and administrative law will serve the residents of the Second Judicial District well."
"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of the state of Utah as a district court judge," said Bean. "I will strive to continue to uphold the highest principles of justice, kindness, civility and integrity put into practice by my predecessor and those who continue to serve the people of Utah as judges on all levels."
Bean is presently a Justice Court judge for Syracuse City, a post he has held since 1993. He is also president and managing partner of Bean & Micken, P.C., a Layton law firm organized in 1991. His professional recognition includes being a two time recipient of the Justice Court Judges' "Distinguished Service Award" and a recipient of the Quality of Justice Award. Dedicated to the highest legal standards, Bean also received an award for outstanding service to law related education in 2002.
Bean received his Juris Doctor in 1989 from the University of Utah College Of Law and a Bachelor of Science in political science from the University of Utah. He also served as clerk for Utah Supreme Court Justice Gordon R. Hall in 1990. Bean was instrumental in organizing the Syracuse City Youth (Peer) Court, and he volunteers as pro bono counsel for protective order hearings in Davis County.
Bean fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Michael Lyon, on September 1, 2013. The governor's appointment is subject to confirmation by the Utah State Senate.

His Favorite Sibling and Niece/Nephew
Tonight Brody prayed "Please bless Elder Bean to be healthy. Bless Elder Bean to have good courage."
I really didn't want to go down to the MTC but when Nate was set apart the night before he left, the Stake President encouraged us to all go as a family. So we piled in the Escalade and I only really felt like I had to vomit once because of Walter Mitty driving (inside joke for all those in the Bean family.) It was such a neat experience though. I am so glad that we got to go together as a family, go to the Provo Temple grounds first, and then have a family prayer before dropping him off. The MTC was amazing, and I only got to see the curb. It's true that it is very quick curbside and we were grateful that we got to say our goodbyes and hug at the temple grounds. Nate was very anxious/nervous but after he got out of the car he was off. No hesitation. We are so proud of him and grateful for his choice to serve the Lord.
